Light That Supports Cellular Energy + Recovery

What is Red Light Therapy?

Red Light Therapy (also called photobiomodulation) is a non-invasive wellness therapy that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to support cellular function and tissue health.

At Harbor Health, red light therapy is delivered using medical-grade LED panels that bathe the body in targeted light wavelengths designed to penetrate the skin and underlying tissues.

These wavelengths are absorbed by the mitochondria—the “power plants” of your cells—where they may help support energy production, circulation, and recovery processes.

What happens during a session?

  • A staff member will go over controls with you and help you select a program for your experience
  • You will lie comfortably on the massage table and be provided with eye protection and aromatherapy choice (optional)
  • The panels emit red and near-infrared light directly to the skin- no heat or discomfort
  • Sessions usually last about 20 minutes, depending on the treatment area and desired intensity

What conditions may be helped with Red Light Therapy?

Early research and patient experiences suggest it may support:

  • Muscle and joint recovery
  • General aches, stiffness, and inflammation
  • Skin health, tone, and collagen support
  • Circulation and tissue healing
  • Energy levels and overall wellness
  • Supportive care during recovery from physical strain or exercise

Important note: Red Light Therapy is considered a complementary wellness service. It is not a medical treatment or cure, and results vary from person to person.

Who should not use Red Light Therapy?

For safety reasons, Red Light Therapy may not be appropriate for individuals with:

  • Light sensitivity disorders or conditions triggered by light exposure
  • Active skin cancers or suspicious lesions in the treatment area
  • Use of photosensitizing medications (e.g., certain antibiotics, isotretinoin)
  • Pregnancy (precautionary, due to limited research)
  • Recent radiation therapy to the treatment area

Always consult with your healthcare provider before beginning any new wellness therapy, especially if you have significant medical conditions.
